Living within your means.

Some of us have to learn the hard way; that was my typical answer to tough questions a year ago. You see, a year ago I was pretty much in the same situation atleast as far as circumstances are concerned. Circumstances however impacted me in a different way then. I allowed them too much of my energy and focus. I found though, that the harder I tried to control the situations I had no control over, the more problematic they became. Since that time, I have completely stopped worrying about those situations, and have seen them dramatically improve. I have quit smoking in the mean time, got in the best shape of my life, and ultimately have found more happiness than I imagined one could have without the one they love. The key is not to live beyond your means in any area if your life. We often think of this as in financial terms, but it extends into every area of our lives. We live beyond our means socially, emotionally, and physically. If you take the time to look, you will probably find a need fir drastic iverhaul in your own life. After all, you have to work and sleep. Then chances are you may be married. Now, how much time do you have left? We havent even factored in religion, friendships, traffic.. And a hobby? Please do yourself a favor, practice zen and avoid dying before your time

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

A messianic jewish rabbi and a zen master meet in a subway. No, really.. Not only did it happen, but it was epic to say the least. This rabbi engaged me in religious conversation that halted my day for a good half hour. I was taken back by knowledge of christianity and judaism. Therefore certain elements of our chance encounter were rather refreshing. How refreshing? So much so that I didn’t even get his name ( insert joke about my ex wife here.) It was like when you bump into the person youre in love with, amd realize after the brief moment sailed..what you were gonna say vanished, and you uttered something far less stellar than what you had planned. Anyway, this rabbi and I share similar backgrounds. We were raised in the pentecostal church. This alone is enough reason for a second encounter, but the fact that he challenged my zen is a much more enticing one. Suffice it to say, in the end I told him I practiced zen to pluck up the roots of suffering in my life and to teach others to do the same. Give a man a fish, he eats for a day…teach him and he eats for life. He vowed another visit soon, and I on the behalf of the teaching am anxiously awaiting. I simply cannot make any apologies for the truth.

brad warner, zen priest among other things is currently in Knoxville, TN. For those of you who know anything about zen buddhism, know that warner is a type of celebrity in the realm of zen. Why exactly is mr. Warner in Knoxville? His sister lives here, and its christmas. thus giving example that christmas is much more than a holiday, but a homecoming for all peoples regardless of faith. p.s mr. Warner if you want to do some good; you may want to stop by losel shedrup ling off of kingston pike. You know not all of us have the means to study under nishijima roshi.
